Jane Howard

Oil Paintings

Jane Howard is a thoughtful painter, full of questions she seeks to answer through her art.

Originally from Texas, her studio art education led her to the Art Students League of New York where she spent several years working and studying.  Eventually, she departed the city for the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, a scenic area that has attracted artists since the turn-of-the-century. During her years there, she was a frequent participant in Monadnock’s highly-regarded annual open studio tour.  Over the years, the need to escape cold winters led her to St. George Island - the subject of many of her paintings - and finally to Apalachicola, making it her permanent home in 2014.   Jane is known for her elegant and original views of beaches, coastal scenes, structures, and the elements of everyday life that surround her.  As a "lifelong student," she finds the unique light, color and atmosphere of the Gulf Coast to be the art class that instructs her daily.

For me, “look” is just a beginning. Identifying “beauty or “things of interest” makes me want to know how and why? Shape, color, space, how it fits together, light, what it evokes…  I paint things that are meaningful to me. I paint to understand the visual and emotive beauty of the world.
